Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression can show up in many different ways, whether feeling buzzing and restless, frozen and stuck, or agitated and angry. And, it can present at many different points of life in response to transitions, challenges, hardships, relationships, and grief.

The weight of the fear and shame, and despair and grief, that underpin the moods disrupt daily living and make the weight of life’s demands that much heavier.

At Root & Rise, individual therapy for anxiety and depression extends beyond coping skills. Here, therapy targets the fear and shame that create internal conflicts, confusion, and distress, and to improve regulation, contain despair, and provide relief.

Career & Burnout

Feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or burnt out at work can create stress and anxiety that pervades other areas of life. Most adults spend the majority of their waking hours during the work week at work, preparing for work, or thinking about work, which makes feeling satisfied and fulfilled at work that much more important. Stagnating, lacking purpose, and/or feeling over-extended all take a toll on self-esteem and motivation.

At Root & Rise, therapy caters to the emotional exhaustion of burnout by addressing the individual’s unmet needs as well as what has been sacrificed to sustain the work. By reconnecting to needs and grounding them in agency and advocacy, clients at Root & Rise grow to maintain their individuality even within occupations and systems that may push against as well as find additional paths of work and fulfillment.

Codependency

Codependency is a style of relating in which a person restricts or rejects their own needs in an effort to sustain a relationship with another. This style of relating forms early on in development in relationships with unclear boundaries and expectations and complicated dynamics. These patterns of self-sacrifice become deeply exhausting when they extend into adulthood and create imbalances, as the affected person may feel responsible for others’ emotional states even at the cost of oneself.

At Root & Rise, therapy explores guilt and shame; processes narratives that create expectations of oneself and others; and renegotiates an internal sense of responsibility (i.e. agency). By reconnecting to their sense of self and reuniting with the parts of themselves that have been disavowed, indiviudals grow more aligned with their most authentic selves.

Grief, Loss, & Separation

Grief, loss, and separation have profound impacts on the maps of our internal world. When we lose someone, we lose not only their physical presence and connection with them, but also the parts of ourselves that we shared with them, the versions of ourselves that we were with them, and the opportunity to continue to grow with them. In the early stages of loss, the internal presence of the person often feels heavy, demanding, or even haunting because our minds work to hold them still in time, exactly as they were, even as life progresses.

Carrying the weight of loss and working to close the mental gaps of distance and time are exhausting and can have significant impacts on other parts of life. Rather than striving to “move on,” therapy at Root & Rise encourages individuals to connect with their memories to strengthen the bonds with both whom and/or what they have lost and with the version of themselves they grew to be in that relationship. Here, therapy explores how past losses shape current pain and distress, to transform absences and voids into meaningful, integrated memories.

Identity-specific therapy focuses on the complex intersections of identity and works to create space to hold all parts in harmony. In a city as fast-paced as New York, the pressure to shift your presentation among contexts can pull you in different directions; attempting to cater to different audiences can leave you feeling fragmented or disconnected from your true self.

At Root & Rise, therapy moves beyond the surface to explore the narratives assigned by society, family, and intersecting cultures. Together, we can examine how these narratives may be pushing against each other and/or your authentic self-expression, resulting in shame or a false-self. Discerning which voices are really yours and which may belong to others at your detriment creates the space to access who you really are–integrating all that is you and shedding what never truly was. With compassion, we can get curious about the cumulative impact of the systemic stressors, the echoes of past intergenerational trauma, and the complex masking that forms as a means of acceptance, safety, and survival. Connecting with authenticity and expanding into a sense of belonging, therapy here welcomes and holds all that makes you you.

Identity

Relationships

While we are biologically wired for attachment, long-lasting connections can be more challenging to maintain. Throughout our lives, we develop implicit contracts of what we expect in relationships. We may feel frustrated, angry, resentful, and disappointed when others fall short of expectations and needs go unmet, which can lead to conflicts and/or distance even in the closest relationships.

Whether encountering challenges in relationships with family, friends, or romantic partners, therapy at Root & Rise builds awareness around individual’s needs. With this insight, individuals are empowered to meet their own needs where they can and communicate their relational needs to invite deeper emotional intimacy, and thus connection, with the other.

Substance Use Recovery

Substance use issues often emerge as a deeply personal, albeit painful, attempt to manage overwhelming emotions or seek relief from unresolved internal conflicts. In a compassionate therapeutic space, we view these behaviors not as moral failings, but as adaptive responses to distress that deserve understanding rather than judgment.

With compassion and curiosity, therapy at Root & Rise for mild to moderate substance use move beyond symptom management to explore underlying motivations for use and the relationship the person has developed with the substance. By understanding what the substance is soothing and shielding, we can understand what needs have gone unmet and what nourishment and care the person really needs. From here, we begin to foster a safe reconnection with oneself. Breaking old patterns of numbing their feelings or running from them, individuals learn to come face-to-face with their needs and to fulfill them for long-term healing.

Women’s Health & Fertility

Whether planning for it, trying with limited success, having it and losing it, or encountering it unexpectedly, conceiving is a tender and vulnerable undertaking that powerfully connects the present to the vast potential futures. The experiences of pregnancy, infertility, and loss are deeply woven into one’s identity and sense of the self. Whether you are facing the long wait of infertility, the profound grief of a miscarriage, or the heavy nuances of a terminating pregnancy, these moments deserve the space encompass all the vulnerabilities, hopes, and uncertainties.

At Root & Rise, therapy explores the many layered meanings of motherhood, the impact of fertility and conception on bodily autonomy,  the shifts in dynamics with the partner and potential co-parent, and the past family dynamics that may resurface during these life-altering transitions. Processing these intimate experiences within a safe, non-judgmental frame allows these parts to integrate into the fabric of your identity and illuminate a peaceful path ahead.
